You Can’t Match Scratch

Every morning, flour gets weighed by the gram. Secret bagel poaching liquid gets a simmering. Yeast proofs. Bananas get mashed. Dough rises.

Why? Because that’s how we get delicious. Yes, we’re a coffee house. But so many coffeehouses have not-so-good snacks. They may beat us in variety on a given day, but delivered goods will never beat made in house.

Have you ever tasted homemade chocolate sauce? Or homemade vanilla syrup? Delish. You’ll never enjoy a mocha as much as you will when it’s as labor love-intensive as ours.

Chai? No question. Infinitely better from scratch. Cardamom, peppercorns, cinnamon, anise, ginger, cloves, tea leaves and water. That’s all.

We apologize in advance if we sell out of your favorite goodie, but know that it’s in the interest of freshness. We can always bake more.

Holiday Hours and Why We Open (Or Don’t)

Ever wonder why some businesses are closed on holidays? Or more likely, wonder why they are open? Well, I’ll tell you how I like to handle that at Cafe Luna.

If you’ve ever visited a service establishment on a holiday, chances are the people working clearly don’t want to be there. Sometimes they do, but mostly not. Some businesses draw straws, or make the new guy open up on Christmas morning. Some places employ a rotation where everyone cycles through and ends up with a turn. Lots of industry workers know holidays can be real money shifts, too. So they volunteer. Cool.

While I’d never force someone to work a holiday, and I’d rather they spend time with their families or grill out with friends, I also want to be open for business. So I leave it up to them. If my barista usually works Tuesday and it happens to be Christmas, does she want to work? Yes? Cool, I’ll bake some goods so she can have some stuff to sell. No? Day off for everyone! By automatically closing because it’s Christmas, I’d essentially be taking money out of her pocket – not a good thing.

Rest assured, if we are open, your barista wants to be here!

Now I have to go wrap some presents.

Localism & Seasonality

As satisfying as a blueberry muffin can be, those made with juicy, fresh, locally grown fruit are better.

It’s a matter of fact if you get a blueberry muffin in October, it was made with either frozen berries, or berries imported from somewhere like Chile or China.

With an abundance of local produce available year round, we choose to bake with these local ingredients as much as possible. This leads us to be creative in our seasonal baking.

Red Bean muffins? Why yes, we invented those.

Orange Cream? We make those.

Ginger Chunk Muffins? Yes!

Of course, we love berry season the most. Two favorites are the Classic Blueberry and the EveryBerry & Mascarpone Muffins.
